Until now, Walther von Goethe (composer and eldest grandson of J. W. von Goethe) and his work have received little attention, and have often even been disregarded. His estate—which is largely preserved in the Goethe and Schiller Archive (compositions, letters, diaries, etc.)—has hardly been cataloged and has been the subject of very little research. To uncover this treasure—part of Goethe’s literary estate and included in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register through its preservation in the Goethe and Schiller Archive—and, in the process, to do greater justice to Walther von Goethe, acknowledge his achievements, and reveal further facets of the history of Weimar and beyond, are the central aims of a multi-module artistic and scholarly research project initiated by the singer and literary scholar Prof. Dr. Ulf Bästlein (University of Music and Performing Arts Graz; appointed Distinguished Fellow of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar in 2023). The project brings together the Klassik Stiftung Weimar, the Freies Deutsches Hochstift in Frankfurt am Main, the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, the Hochschule für Musik FRANZ LISZT Weimar, the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts, the Goethe Museum Düsseldorf, and the Austrian Academy of Sciences as cooperating partners.
