He then went on to study singing in Freiburg, passing his graduate recital exam with distinction.<\/p><p>His stage career began at the Stadttheater in Heidelberg. Since then, he has performed in Augsburg, Hannover, L\u00fcbeck, and Hamburg among other locations. B\u00e4stlein has won many awards (including second prize in the German Music Competition).<\/p><p>He has performed in many countries across Europe as well as China, the United States, and Turkey and is a frequent guest at international music festivals, including the Festival of Flanders (Belgium), the Stresa Festival (Italy), the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival and Rheingau Music Festival (Germany), Styriarte (Austria), the Ludwigsburg Palace Festival, the Weimar Kunstfest and the Herrenchiemsee Festival (Germany). He has given song and Lieder recitals with Charles Spencer, Michael Gees, James Tocco, Julius Drake, Axel Bauni, Detlef Kraus, Sascha El Mouissi and Hedayet Jonas Djeddikar.<\/p><p>B\u00e4stlein has recorded a large number of CDs, including settings of Heine, Goethe, Storm, Hebbel, Vo\u00df, Trakl-, Geibel- and Leitner. His recordings include songs from Anselm H\u00fcttenbrenner, songs from Gustav Jenner, Winterreise, Dichterliebe, and drinking songs. He has recorded oratorios and operas for Sony Classical, CPO, Orfeo, H\u00e4nssler and NAXOS among others.<\/p><p>He is Professor of Singing at L\u00fcbeck Academy of Music, Germany, and the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz, Austria. From 2009 to 20018 he was also Co-Founder and Director of the Artistic Doctoral School at the University of Music, Graz.<\/p><p>He regularly holds masterclasses in China, Russia, Turkey and Italy.\u00a0<\/p><p>In 2000, he founded \u201cLiedkunst\u201d in Husum (Schleswig-Holstein, in cooperation with the pianist Charles Spencer). As part of this Lied festival, B\u00e4stlein is involved in the promotion of rising talent (masterclasses and a competition with an awards ceremony) and in concerts which have garnered international acclaim.<\/p><p>B\u00e4stlein is the editor of Anselm H\u00fcttenbrenner\u2019s Lieder and the author of publications on the early 19th-century German Lied and on artistic and academic research.<\/p><p>B\u00e4stlein has developed new and innovative concert formats: panel discussions on literary and music history, alternating readings and Lied performances.\u00a0<\/p><p><span lang=\"DE\">Currently,\u00a0<\/span>as a 'Distinguished Fellow of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar',<span lang=\"DE\">\u00a0head of\u00a0<\/span>an artistic-scientific research project on the life and work of Walther von Goethe.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ulf B\u00e4stlein Bass-Bariton Studium der Altphilologie, Philosophie und Germanistik (Staatsexamina und Promotion) in Freiburg, Wien und Rom, Gesangsstudium in Freiburg (Konzertexamen mit Auszeichnung).
